Desastre, política y región
Jalisco, 1992-2002
Abstract
On 22 April 1992, the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, witnessed one of Mexico's most devastating industrial accidents ever, which ultimately led to the resignation of Gov. Guillermo Cosio Vidaurri of the PRI. In the next elections, the PAN won the governorship and has remained in power ever since. In addition, the PAN greatly increased its numbers of mayors and local and federal deputies. Ten years on, this article explores the extent to which the events of 22 April 1992 fueled the state of Jalisco's political and electoral transformation. In doing so, it analyzes both the context and the political repercussions of the disaster and Jalisco's electoral dynamics at the local, regional, and national levels.
