La salud en Chiapas:
Un diagnóstico donde los números resultan insuficientes
Abstract
This article considers the conventional statistical indicators (life expectancy, mortality and morbidity rates) in the study of the health conditions of the Chiapan population, -but argues their insufficiency for diagnosing the situation in the locality. In an attempt to overcome this problem, this paper presents an analysis in which the problems, resources and services are broken down and complements this information with that obtained through interviews with health authorities and with an examination of the demands of the Zapata National Liberation Army. The critical situation identified is explained by the conditioning social and economic factors, the insufficiency of resources and the lack of equity in their distribution, as well as by the preference far traditional medicine and the low levels of productivity in the service sector.
