Abstract

The central hypothesis in this research is that Lazaro Cardenas has become a symbol in the actual political culture, and as such, he is framed in a symbolic net. This general symbolic system is the mythology on the Mexican Revolution. Starting with the symbolization of Lazaro Cardenas, myths of his personality and acts are constructed, and it takes to a divinization of the character. As none other post revolutionary president, he has been incorporated to the social imagery as a symbol of the honest, integrity, courage, justice, nationalism, patriotism and revolutionary behaviour. But, as in every symbol, it has also oppositions. As opposite of a mythicised image, there is a dimytization too: he is a demagogue and a traitor to the revolutionary principles. The historiography of the thirties, analyzed in this work, shows the aforementioned.
