Abstract

This essay approaches the actual debate, in the empirical democratic theory, on the relationships between equity and democracy, and in democratization and modernization. Examine the main arguments from the Political Economy and from the Political Science disciplines, to conclude that there is an inconclusive debate. Contrary to the common wisdom on Democracy as Panacea and the end of the road of the modernization process, we can observe an aggravation of social inequality into the process of emergence of new democracies, but also in the mature democracies that has not been due approached.
