Abstract

This article examines the relationship between economic integration agreements and higher educa¬tion in Latin America. Although such agreements have their own economic logic and are not designed to solve educational problems, they may offer new opportunities for the stimulation of higher education. On the one hand, access to new and competitive markets, free from commercial barriers, tends to induce the spread of technological innovations and thus has repercussions on educational requirements of a scientific and technological nature. This dynamic clearly calls for a response on the level of planning in higher education. On the other hand, the process of commercial integration can lead to policies of cooperation and homologation in education, among participating nations, especially in the areas of science and technology.
