Abstract

The article explains the starting points and the basic parameters of some theoretical models on rational choice, used in the last three decades in the social sciences. Particularly, it criticizes methodological individualism, the assumption of neutrality of social actions media to achieve a goal or a preestablished value, and it questions the idea of «reason» assumed by these mode1s. It also confronts the premises of rational choice with the Weberian theory of «instrumental rationality» to evaluate the theoretical coherence and the heuristic possibilities on the rational choice theory.
