Abstract

Manzanillo's harbor, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, has undergone a "sudden" boom gener¬ated by the economic model change that originated, among other things, a wide commercial opening of Mexico. Manzanillo's dynamism reflects not only on the increase of foreign trade flow, but also on the models of regional articulation and territorial integration recently adopted. Its past and development, however, could not be understood without taking into account the singular way on which it has adapted to the various phases of the capitalistic system. That is why this article seeks to establish the relationship between the country's recent development models and Manzanillo's seaport role as an element of space articulation of the country's productive flows and chains. To that effect, this article intends to characterize, from the imports substitution period until the recent commercial opening, the ways in which the seaport links to the various regions and territorial areas, and, in general, to establish its implications in space organization. From a theoretical perspective, this matter demands to place the unity of analysis in the capitalistic world economics and its recent restructuration, which has become to create and interlaced, and at the same time selective, space, fragmented, but each time more globalized due to the articulation of extensive nets.
