Abstract

In this article are analyzed the main postulates of Victor Turner's symbolic anthropology. With this purpose the ritual theory of this anthropologist is explained in the light of original concepts such as that of "arenas", "fields", "dominant symbols", "social dramas" and "Iiminality". The "arenas" constitute the concrete scenario in which the ideologies become symbols and political power is mobilized. We investigate how for Turner the symbols act like forces in the social processes and they complete certain functions in the ceremonies and rituals.
