Cambios en la cultura política en materia religiosa, México, 1988-2002
Abstract
The aim of this article is to provide the reader with an understanding of long-term church-state relations, covering three periods that were rich in declarations and actions by high-ranking members of the clergy in connection with the presidential elections of 1988, 1994, and 2000. It clarifies the changes that took place in how the political class perceived the phenomenon of religion. It reviews secularism and anticlerical ism with a pragmatic viewpoint that, while not touching the current legislation, avails itself of the exhaustion of the ideology of revolutionary nationalism and does not hesitate to use religious symbols to present itself as an alternative to cutthroat capitalism or failed communism.
