Abstract

Since 2000, Bolivia has been the scene of profound political, economic, and social transformations. One can view the crises of 2003 and 2005 as a part of a delegitimization of the political system, and as an emergence of new campesino and indigenous identities that –from an institutional and extra-institutional perspective– questioned the meaning of nation and democracy in Bolivia. In this context, the December 18, 2005 presidential elections present the opportunity for the resolution to the “catastrophic stalemate” and the construction of a new democratic system.
