Abstract

Monitoring and evaluation are essential components of natural protected areas’ management since they allow visualizing and assessing the changes and resilience of socioecological systems. A conceptual model of appropriation of nature is developed in order to assess natural resources’ management by Yucatec Maya communities located in a protected area in the northeastern Yucatan Pensinsula. The conceptual model gives the basis for developing an instrument for monitoring and evaluating protected areas with human presence. The paper shows how this instrument could be useful for having a broader understanding of natural protected areas. The analysis could help policy-makers design and implement biodiversity conservation policies more culturally, socially and productively contextualized. Key words: socioecological, environmental monitor, biodiversity.
