The aim of this work is to study the difficult process in the creation of a common european energy policy. It first studies the historic rivalry between the europeist and the sovereign stances of the member states. Secondly, it analyses the hurdles and perspectives for teh development of a coherent and efficient common energy policy. Later, it unveils the european weknesses which have been revealed by powerful international actors, especifically by Russia, which taking advantage of the 2006 and 2009 gas crisis has exposed the existing fallacies about the European Union. Finally, as a result of the example that the european energy policy represents, the scholars of International Relations would be able to assess the strenghten and weakness, not only of the european integration process, but the explanatory capacity of the interdependence and institutionalist perspectives. It is argued that given the current attitudes and stances, overwhelmingly nationalistic, the european focus, at least regarding the energy sector seems to be experimenting an impasse, which will prevail unless the covert realism and the nationalistic demosntrations are trascended.
