La selección del candidato presidencial del PRI en 1999: entre lo viejo y lo nuevo
Abstract
This work offers a study of the selection made by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional, PRI) of its candidate to run in the 2000 election year for the Presidency of the Republic. A recount is made of PRI'S presidential candidate selection since 1929 in order to examine 1999's choice, the main purpose of the article. The objective is to prove that "padlocks" imposed within the party prevented Mexico's incumbent President to promote a candidate who would support his economic project, and open opportunities to groups hitherto subordinated to the Executive Power. It concludes that, despite the election results, the PRI grew stronger and proved its validity as an electoral alternative.
