Abstract

This article aims to point out the circumstances under which Jalisco's agricultural sector develops, as well as its relations to the State's predominant agricultural industry, taking into account the sector's weight on the State and the latter's share in national agriculture. Four crops, whose shares allow having a general idea of the sector, will be considered, Among basic crops, corn -since Jalisco is the first producer of this grain at national level. Among in¬dustrial crops, tequila agave and sugar cane -the agave for the present weight of tequila on local agricultural industry; sugar cane, because Jalisco occupies the second place in sugar production at national level. Finally, fruit and vegetable growing is also considered within commercial agriculture, including tomato production, because the latter was the first great scale horticultural crop developed in the State. In addition, because tomato has maintained its predominance within Jalisco's fruit and vegetable growing, and is highly representative of what is happening to the rest of commercial crops.
