Abstract

Through this article we want to penetrate into the existing relation between the republican triad (freedom, equality and brotherhood) and the concept of citizenship. Initially is reflected the controversy between the existing link between freedom and equality and its different postulates. Later, is underlined the influence that these two concepts have in the production of Marshall’s Theory of Citizenship. Later, is emphasized that the concept of brotherhood –the third leg of the republican triad– frequently has been forgotten in this previously mentioned scheme. Opposite to this oblivion, there appear two theories that incorporate the above mentioned concept in their exposition: the republicanism and the theory of the social capital. Finally, all this process has derived in a crisis of the citizenship and of the welfare State. As a conclusion, there are shown some alternatives, which starting from the concept of brotherhood could be important elements in the reconstruction of the concept of citizenship on the basis of the famous revolutionary motto.
