Resumen

Aprovechando las fuertes corrientes del racismo que todavía ejerce considerable influencia en la política de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump usa su hostilidad antiinmigrante para lograr el triunfo electoral que lo llevó a la presidencia en 2016 y para promover su reelección en 2020. Las medidas de control migratorio que ha tomado están destinadas a excluir a los migrantes no-blancos, especialmente musulmanes, mexicanos y centroamericanos, de la vida comunitaria estadounidense. Dichas medidas buscan castigar o deportar a los inmigrantes que ahora viven en Estados Unidos y evitar la entrada mediante decretos ejecutivos arbitrarios, encarcelamiento generalizado, y la imperiosa exigencia a los gobiernos de México y Guatemala de detener a los migrantes que buscan asilo político en Estados Unidos.

Arthur Schmidt

Profesor emérito de historia latinoamericana de Temple University, en Filadelfia. Autor y traductor de varios ensayos y libros sobre México y Centroamérica. Observador internacional de los campamentos de refugiados de salvadoreños y guatemaltecos en Honduras, en la década de 1980, y de las elecciones nacionales de Nicaragua en 1990, El Salvador en 1994 y México en 2018.
