Abstract

This article reviews the first part of The Authoritarian Personality and highlights some of the methodological and technical innovations that Teodoro Adorno and his collaborators made to the empirical study and quantification of potentially antidemocratic attitudes, political ideologies, and tendencies within a personality. The first section focuses on the problem of research; the next two stress the data collection instrument and the construction of the "F scale"; and the final section offers some critical comments on this classic work.
