Abstract

Violence against journalists in Mexico and Veracruz is explained by the simultaneity in time and space of the fragmentation of political power in the failed transition to democracy, and the fragmentation and empowerment of organized crime. Criminal power is used to control local media and coexists with the survival of the traditional control practices of the Mexican State: clientelism and violence. The main victims of these new forms of media control have been the most precarious journalists, employees of small local media, which have no national or state transcendence.
